Saving template as a document

Hi all,

I just learned from another user in the mailmerge.fields group that a change
was made in the behavior of templates from Word 97-2000 to Word 2002-2003.
In the later versions it is possible to save a template, using Save As, as a
document. Doing this will strip out AutoText. In the earlier versions you
could not change the format.

I don't know why this change was made but wanted to pass the information on
since the advice I had been giving (and seen from others) was that you could
not do this.

AFAIK, it is not possible to save a template as a document in *any* version
of Word, but I'm willing to be proven wrong.

I tested this before posting. I just did it in Word 2003. The user said she
did it in Word 2002 (which I no longer have loaded). You sure can't in Word
97 or Word 2000.

I created a new template and saved it as a template. I then used Save As on
the open template to save it as a document. This floored me; I can't imagine
why MS made this change other than a mistaken answer to user complaints
about not being able to do it. The thread where I was told this (after
having informed the user all so authoritatively that you could not do it
<g>) was in mailemerge.fields with a topic of "Weird CreateDate behavior."

So, you should be able to prove yourself wrong by trying it. I did.

The message that pops up when saving as a document indicates that all
AutoText will be lost and that the saved document can "no longer be used as
an Add-In." It asks if you want to do this anyway. (It wasn't being used as
an Add-In anyway, but did contain AutoText.) Word 2003 (11.5604.5703)

This is one of the more helpful popup warnings I've seen in Word! (Compare
it to the alert you get if you mark a text field (formatted to be a date) as
hidden text in a protected form. Put in a date and tab out of the field for
a good one!)

I'll take your word for it, but I agree this is a strange move on MS's part.
