Saving passwords

My machine refuses to save log in and password information for a number of
sites. I have added the sites under the User Accounts manage passwords
option. I have specifically allowed cookies for the sites in IE. I have
selected the option to "remember me on this computer" (or its alternatives)
on the sites themselves. I have even tried logging on to those sites with
all my security apps and my Windows firewall disabled. All to no avail. I
return to the sites and it is as though I am a first time user and have done
none of the above. What am I overlooking? This is just a convenience issue,
but a very annoying one. Any help out there?

First guess is your running a malware detection program, and one of
it's duties is to clear the cookies.

First off, many sites, particularly those of a financial
nature, simply won't let you save log in names and passwords.

That said, you might want to check the following:

Go to Control Panel and double click Administrative Tools.
In the Administrative Tools folder, double click Services.
In the Services console, scroll down to Protected Storage.
Make sure Started is entered under Status and Automatic is the
Startup Type.
If not, right click on that line and select Properties from the
menu.
Make the appropriate changes and click OK.
Do the same for Remote Procedure Call (RPC).
You may have to reboot to see if this works.

Good luck

Thanks, but went to Administrative Tools and the settings there were as you
suggested they need to be. Any other thoughts?

Could be. I am running a number of security apps, 3 of which are set on
auto-detect. I also have Windows Firewall working and have a hardware
firewall in place. I have tried to save user names and passwords with
everything off (except for Windows Defender and the hardware firewall)
without luck. If indeed it is one of these, does anyone know of any way to
work around them? Can it really be that there are options to allow these
cookies in Windows, but that those options will only actually work when the
machine is left completely unprotected?

You need to check the config (preferences) of each program to see what
they do.

You can run FireFox or Opera, as an option -

Since I have cookies approved for the specific sites in question (both in IE
and my Windows user account), and since the preferences in each of my
security utilities is set to notify me if anything is being blocked, and
since I am not getting any such notifications, it is hard to see one them as
being the issue, although there is obviously a conflict somewhere and I
suppose security remains a suspect. I'm not willing to give up security for
the convenience, of course, but if anyone could point me to a setting that
I'm overlooking it would be appreciated. Your comment regarding using
Firefox or Opera is interesting, though. It seems to suggest that the
difficulty I am having is a known issue in IE and that it is NOT an issue in
those other two. Is such the case?

The settings in control panel / InterNet Options should be the correct
ones to set.

Try this, in Windows Explorer goto:
Documents and Settings\XXX\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
XXX being your log in name

Delete everything, your missing your cookies anyhow.

Open IE goto CNN.COM hit F5 to refresh the directory and click on
name, Doing the same I get two cookies and one called cookie.crumb.

Close IE then hit F5 see if the cookies are still there.

If not you are set up to delete cookies when you close IE, or
something else is removing them.

If you can't see any files then you need to change your setup.

Open Windows Explorer (WinKey+E), under TOOLS, open Folder Options,
then the View Tab. Change these settings:

Select Display the contents of system folders
Select Show hidden files and folders
UnSelect Hide Extensions for known file types
Unselect Hide Protected operating system files (ignore popup)

Ok Nepatsfan,
I have been eyeing this thread b/c I have a similar situation. My *prob.*
seems to be JUST w/MSN.
My id stays but pswd doesn't. I have tried working w/someone at MS Live as
well as on the newsgroup.
But no luck, so I just decided since it is just MSN I'd eneter the password.
Now after looking at the Services I see 2 RPC's 1 just RPC the 2nd RPC
Locator.
RPC Is set as you mentioned Started & Auto. But Locator has nothing under
status and Manual under Statup type.
Is that right? TIA

The settings you have for the RPC Locator service, Status blank
and Manual for Startup type, are correct.
