Saving in .avi format

I don't know what I am missing but my sister and I want to create a moivie using audio and digital pictues. Is there a way to save as .avi so it can play on a dvd player to show family via the TV. Plus what would be the BEST software to purchase (and user friendly) to convert to DVD. We love the MM2 program and want to be able to use to the fullest. Thanks in advance :o)
 
See the DVD Software section of www.papajohn.org to see what people are
using with Movie Maker. For the BEST one, start with what came with your DVD
burner.

MyDVD makes me feel like I'm still in MM2, so if you like it there, you
might consider the Sonic line.
