saving icon arrangement

How can I save my icon arrangement?
Every time I start the machine the icons are 8 high {piled to the left}.
If I select arrange icons by name then they are 7 high and auto-arrange is
not checked.

I don't know why your icons rearrange themselves on a normal boot but
here's something that was recommended to me here for saving/restoring
icon layout:
