Saving files

I have access to a webpage that shows a list of links. Each link leads to a
file that I want to save on my machine. The problem is that when I right
click on the link and select "save target as", XP adds an extension to the
filename when it saves it. For example one of the files is a script named
countWords. When I right click on the link and select "save target as", XP
saves this file as countWords.txt instead of countWords. How do I stop XP
being so overly "helpful"? Thanks.

Thanks, but it doesn't quite work. Here is what happens.
I left click on the link to the file.
IE displays the contents of the file, which I beileve is a plain ascii text
file. Its name is countWords.
From the IE "File" menu I select "Save As"
A "Save Web Page" window appears with fields as follows;

File Name: countWords
Save As Type: Web Page Complete (*.htm; *.html)
Encoding: Unicode (UTF-8)

If I then click Save the file will be saved as countWords.htm
If I choose Text File (*.txt) the file is saved as countWords.txt
I am forced to choose a "Save As Type" when I really don't want to.

I just renamed the newly saved countWords.htm to countWords (ignoring the
warnings not to) and then opened it with Wordpad. The file is as it should
be. XP seems to be trying to tell me what filename extensions it believes are
required. I can't seem to get XP to trust me that I know what I want the file
to be called.

when saving from IE, put double quotes round the file name. This will
prevent an extension being added.

ie In the save webpage box you will have the filename as "countWords" rather
than just countWords.
