Saving files

I have just started work at a school and I hav been presented with a problem
in my first week.
The kids are supposed to be using Front Page to design a web page. They
started this at another location, saved their work and brought it back to the
school.
Now when they update it, they cannot save any amendments.
I admit to never having used Front Page and have no idea why they are unable
to save any Front Page files.
Someone has suggested that you have to be a power user to save in Front
Page, but I cannot believe this is true and we cannot give these kids that
level of access.
Any help or suggestions will be gratefully received.
Thanks.

How did they "save" the files? Did they "publish" to the disk location?
This is beyone a doubt the best way to preserve a FrontPage web...

Teri,

To be perfectly honest, I don't know. I haven't had a chance to see exactly
what they do yet as I was only told about the problem this afternoon as I was
leaving.
I was hoping there might be a simple answer so I could earn some brownie
points next week!

The users must have FP Authoring Permissions to save to a FP server based web. Otherwise each user
would have to have a folder assigned to them on the server or the local PC, that has been converted
to a FP disk-based web via FP. This is accomplished by opening a folder via FP's File Menu | Open
Web / Site command and browsing to the folder.

I've seen a lot of cases where someone has a disk-based FrontPage web, then
simply saves a file or two to removable media, and they have little or
nothing to show for it. You can easily zip or copy an entire FP web, but if
they are simply saving the html files, they have a disaster, as the images,
themes, and navigation (assuming these are used) will not save.

My guess is that they have saved their HTML files and not the entire web, so
they have nothing left of the FrontPage structure...

Re-reading, Harry, I agree with Thomas. I believe your issue is with
permissions, since the initial web work "seems" to work based on your post,
and the updates are the issue. The permissions can be set through FrontPage
or directly on the server via the server's SharePoint Administrator panel.

I am sorry for appearing thick, but when you refer to server, are you
refering to a web server or a file server. Also where is the server's
SharePoint Administrator panel.

Not a problem, Harry - you're not appearing thick... When I am referring to
a server, I mean the "online source from which others view the web". As for
the SharePoint Administrator panel, this is available on Windows-based web
servers, but I'm not sure what i there on the Linux/Unix servers. It is a
server-side adjustment, which you may be able to accomplish with Thomas's
"fix" through FronttPage when logged in "live" on the *server*. Did that
clear anything up?

I think its getting clearer!! So we do need a web server then??
We run Windows 2000 Server with W2K clients.
They tell me that they were ok last year, but I think they had some problems
with servers some months ago and I am beginning to suspect that they have not
replaced everything as it was.

I understand that last year's kids were ok, but they had a problem some
months ago when they 'lost' the servers. I am beginning to suspect that they
did not return everything to how it was before.

Hi, Harry~

Yes, you definitely need SOME type of "web server" - whether it is set up
locally or on a physical remote server - otherwise, you'll have to go to each
machine your student is on and do a "File, Preview in Browser..." routine to
see what's going on.

Thanks Teri, Sorry about the multiple messages just now - the first 2 said
they weren't sent.
I'll check it out on Monday - Thanks again for your help.
I'm off to bed now!
