Saving excel files

I am using excel 2000. When I save a file to a CD-RW it is saved as rea
only. I can retreive it and work with it, but not allowed to save th
changes to the CD.
I am using windows XP professional.
Any suggestions

Do not attempt to open files directly from the CD. Copy to hard drive
then open.

Also suggest you do not save directly to the CD. Eventual corruption will
result.

Note: when you copy a file to CD it becomes "read-only". No way around that.

When you copy back to hard drive it remains "read-only"

Go into Windows Explorer and de-select the "read-only" attribute.

Try again to open from hard drive.

Hi Gord, I know you've posted about burning software before.

So you back-up files to CDRW for security, then your hd dies, then you
restore them to your new one but they're read-only?

That's not good (,compared to floppy, anyway).

All depends upon how the files get "burned" to the CD.

With regular Windows burning, they will always be read-only.

If you were to use a packet writing application like Nero InCD, files would
not be read only and individual files could be erased or written to on the CD
just like a big floppy disk.

The important point is that, as Gord said in his original post, after
the files are copied back to the hard drive, the Read Only setting can
be turned off.

So, saving files to a CD is an excellent way to create a backup set of
files.

Thanks, I did read that. I asked because our org issues weekly bulletins +
2-3 daily bulletins. We're obliged to keep them, so we opt for e-versions
rather than ½-a-dozen filing cabinets. Once a week we zip them to floppy. I
think we'll stick with that, rather than potentially having to turn off the
Read Only setting 100s of times, presumably.

There is a handy little utility program for removing the read only attribute
from multiple files and folders.

http://www.geocities.com/edgemeal_software/Attrib-R.htm

Install then run. Select a folder and/or subfolders and OK to remove the RO
attribute from all.
