saving changes to attachments

Here is the scenario: I am using Outlook 2002 in an
Exchange Server (5.5) environment. I opened a message with
an attachment and then opened the attachment. After making
some changes, I click Save and then close the document
(Word doc). When I went back into the message and opened
the attachment, none of the changes I'd made are there.

What happened? Thanks in advance for any ideas.
 
Did you close the message after you made the changes, then reopen it?
