Saving changes creates unopenable file.

I have several users that use Excel 2003 on a regular basis. Some o fthese
users are reporting that when they open an existing excel workbook and make
changes, the application closes and creates a file in the original folder
that housed the original workbook. The file that is created is a random
string of numbers with no extension that I can find, this file cannot be
opened using any application (Word, Notepad, Excel) however I can open and
repair the file from excel but the formulas and formatting are gone so I do
not know if the changes made were saved. I have re-imaged the problem
machine, uninstalled and reinstalled excel with no success in solving the
problem. The issue seems to happen to random machines and random workbooks.
It doesn't matter whether the book is located on a network or local drive.
Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening?

This normally happen when something interrupts a save. Excel saves the
workbook to a copy with the random name and then renames it when the save is
complete and deletes the original.

AV software can sometimes cause this or code (add-ins) which is monitoring
and save

I already tried stopping the anti-virus services to see if it woul dfix the
issue no such luck. I will have a look and see if there are any add-ins that
may be causin gthe problem though.

Thanks

Further to this problem, I have checked to see what Add-Ins were runnign on
the user's machine and there were none. The problem only seems to be
occurring with files on a network share.
