Saving an excel worksheet without closing all worksheets

When I have two or more excel worksheets open and I want
to save changes to one of the worksheets, but keep the
other worksheets open, I have to close all the worksheets
to save the changes. Is there a way to keep the other
worksheets open and just close the one worksheet that I
want to save changes to?

Worksheets are contained in a workbook, which is saved as a file. Whenever
you save, you're saving the entire workbook. Every sheet in it. You can't
save or close an individual sheet in a workbook.

I'm not sure if I wrote my question correctly. I was
referring to having separate files opened, not one file
with several worksheets in it. I could have two or three
different excel files opened, and when I try to save one
of them, I have to close all (i.e. file1.xls, file2.xls,
etc.) I am running Excel 2003 on Windows XP.

This sounds unusual.

What happens when you use File|Save or click the Save icon?
 
When I try to close any of the excel files that are open
(and there are changes to save), all the files will close
in order for me to save the changes and close the file
that I want to close.
 
Where are you trying to close the file (workbook) down from?

Try pushing the small black x at the top right hand corner, just unde
the big red X button. This should close only the file you are workin
on.

Trying to close from other places may cause the Entire program to clos
but you'll get the "Do you want to save changes to ..." mesage come u
for any files you've made changes to first

Or if you want to use the keyboard use Crtl + F4 as
opposed to Alt + F4 which will close the whole program.

What I say is not different than Earl's reply however If
you meant workbooks (more than one) simply chose close
from file menu, which will close active sheet. You can
save and close individual workbook.

Not really. File - Close, or the small x button, or Ctrl-F4 should close
only the active workbook, and should prompt you for saving if necessary. If
any of these is closing all the files, then something is wrong.

The things that close all the files are File - Exit, or the big X button, or
Alt-F4, or Shift-File (which gives you a "close all" option).
