Saving a web locally (in C.Documents, that is)

Friends,
I always read this NG but I seldom post.
But I noticed there are virtually no questions here which remained
unanswered so I told myself I'd surely find someone here who can help.
I posted this problem several times on the Italian Ng but nobody could give
me an answer.
And my FP is an Italian Version, so I apologize in advance if some terms I'm
using are not exactly the words which appear in the original verison of FP.
Try to keep up with me all the same, please!
:-)))

Here is my problem:

When I created my WebSite www.giuseppegazerro.com I made the mistake of
building it directly into *Web Resources*, the folder which is reacheable
only when you're online and asks you for a password everytime you enter.
It was a very small site, three pages all and all.
Then it grew up and now it's a huge boy of 200 pages and 300 Mb.
So I had/have the necessity of keeping it/having it off line, too.
In order to make changes before publishing it, in order to check things out,
in order to........just have it on my Pc, save it, put it on a Cd and so on.
Because it is obvious feeling like using a web in C:Documents, too, instead
of making changes (or making experiments) only when you're online.
Hope you know what I mean.

But I've never been able to do it.
The two most obvious methods 1. Copy and paste from *Web* to *Documents*
and 2. *Publish Web* in *C:Documents* give me both no results.
If I Copy and Paste it, the site does go to Documents, but the internal
links do not work, the site appears *dead*, useless.
If I enter my web in *Modify with FP* and ask to *Publish Web* in
*C:Documents*, it starts, but after a couple of minutes I receive a long
error message, basically saying that it is not possbile to run this files
without the permission of the webmaster (that's me!!!)

Is it possible there is no way to save a site locally?
Is it possible I shall re-build the whole site offline (it'll take ages!!!)
What I am missing?

Thanks a lot for any help!!!

beppe,

Have you tried it this way:

Open FP
Open Web (the server copy: http://www.beppedibeppe.com :-)
Then File | Publish Web TO: your c:\my documents\my webs\moltobeppe (or whatever)
If prompted by FP to create a web at that location say: OK.

ciao,

Robo

Open the online web in Frontpage. Choose File | Publish Web and enter
the local file path (not My Documents, choose a subfolder such as My
Webs) or local URL if you run IIS (preferred).

Regards Jens Peter Karlsen. Microsoft MVP - Frontpage.

Thank you, my friend.
Yes, I already have.
The error message the system returns to me is something like:
*Error when entering the web system in FrontPage.
Contact the website administrator*
Sorry for the bad translation but as I told you the message is in italian.

Thanks anyway.
More ideas?

Try creating a blank web first, see what happens.
File | New Web create an empty web on your C:drive, name it whatever you want.

Now try going online again with the server and publish from the server to the empty web on the C drive.

If you get an error post it here anyway even if it's in italian.

Yes, I still get an error message.
It occurs after one hour, approxiamtely, whn all the folders are prepared.
But there are absolutely no files into it, let alone working links or html
documents.

That's the error message:

***
Errore durante l'accesso ai file del web di FrontPage.
Per informazioni e creazioni delle pagine web sul server, contattare il
webmaster del sito.
Per informazioni sulle operazioni di amministrazione delle pagine web, fare
registo al registro di sistema del server

Thanks again:

Hmmm. The site is showng Service Unavailable right now.

You said the site was very big..if you have single files over 1mb you are trying to Publish..there is a known issue with file size.

You should also check with your host...you may have exceeded size limit on the server.

I'm "southern US", But will make a suggestion. Have you tried FTP the site
to your computer and then use FP to work with it.

I use http://www.ipswitch.com/_download/wsftphome.asp to get ftp. It was
free for personal use, but now looks like you gt an evaluation copy, which
should download the site to your computer.
