backing up my entier conputer to it.

Vista Business and Ultimate has the ability to do that.
Also, use Acronis True Image for no hassles doing it!.

No, not for backing up an entire drive. Just for selected data.

I know... I've been using that utility for 7 or 8 years now.

Some versions of Vista have a full backup ability built-in. Since you
didn't mention which Vista version you have it's hard to say whether or not
you have it. You can also use any one of a number of free or retail
image-based backup programs that can back up your entire computer to the
media of your choice.

Forget paying for cloning software, TeraByte have generously made Copy
Wipe free, and it's idiot proof to use.
I paid AU$159.99 for Norton Ghost 2003 5 years ago but this programme
beats the pants of it.

Cloning is NOT what the OP needs to do. Imaging is what's needed.
