saved doc and now get a 43 pages of squares and rectangles

Someone in the office saved a large doc to disk and now it will only open
showing what looks like code - only all squares. Will not open in any other
program, adobe, corel, etc, even if I change the file ext.

I'm baffled on this one.

Hi Mary,

In Word if you turn on [x] Confirm conversions at open
and use File=>Open to open the file what File type does
Word think it is?
