Saved a file to the shortcut on desktop-no update to server why?

Anthony has a shortcut to our PowerPoint on his desktop. The original file is
on the our server. When he updated the file on his desktop it did not update
the file on the server. Is this the way PowerPoint works or do we have an
error in our software?

Does the shortcut anthony have on his desktop a shortcut to

a presentation (e.g myfile.ppt) or to powerpoint the application ?
(powerpnt.exe)

When Anthony updated the file did he save it?
If so how?
