I don't know how to fix it all in one shot but I know that if you right click
in the white space, not on a file, and choose 'arrange icons by..." and
choose 'name' it'll fix that particular folder that your looking at.

It doesn't stay that way when I go to save something again after doing that,

What about going to Control Panel - Folder Options - on General and View,
click 'restore defaults' - ?????

Restore Sort order in Open and Save dialogs
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_opensaveorder.htm

Or...

To resolve this behavior, reset the default sort order:
1. Right-click Start, click Explore and then click drive C.
2. On the View menu, click Details.
3. Click the Name column to sort items by name, press and hold down the CTRL
key, and then quit Windows Explorer by clicking Close in the upper-right
corner of the screen.
4. Release the CTRL key.
5. Restart your computer.

NOTE: You must perform these steps exactly as they are listed. For example,
do not quit Windows Explorer by clicking Exit on the File menu.

Glad to hear that old Windows 98 MSKB article is still going strong.

Keep having fun. :)

None of these fixes are working for me. Windows does random stuff and no one
including the makers seem to know why. If there are other suggestions please
put them up here.

You have a Microsoft email address so does that mean you work for Microsoft?
If it does they might like to hear about what a jerk you are. Did you think
this was funny to do to someone that comes here for some helpful advice. If
you don't have a constructive suggestion as to how to address the problem it
would have been better to just abstain. But no, you chose to do this instead.
Time to apologize, don't you think???

even so, there is obviously no help concerning window here in the microsoft
windows newsgroups. If someone comes to search out answers he can count on
smart assed replies and condescensions. Since MS has long thought of itself
as the "only game in town" they don't have any service ethic anymore so I
guess I should be unsurprised. They now devote all their attention and
resources to ferreting out who might have a stolen copy of their dysfuntional
software. The rest of us that have actually paid get no consideration
whatsoever. THANKS!

If Wesley's suggestions don't work for you, check out if
FileOpenPatcher by ElmüSoft might be something for you.
<http://www.netcult.ch/elmue/ElmueSoft-en.htm>

Alternatively, check out OpenWide by Luke Hudson
<http://lingo.atspace.com/openwide.html>

These tools will give you greater control over the Open and Save
dialog windows.
