SAVE FILE box

That dialog box has several categories at the left...

MY RECENT DOCS
DESKTOP
DOCUMENTS
MY COMPUTER
MY NETWORK PLACES

When clicked, all but MY COMPUTER display their directories instantaneously.

MY COMPUTER takes 10-15 seconds.
After it does display, <alt-tab> switching to it will show only the box
outline, for about 5 seconds.

Any suspicions on what causes this delay?

Do you have a cd or floppy in any drive? If so remove the media and try
again.

But no, there's nothing in the drives,
and the delay was unchanged after merging both REG entries

But I did run across the fix...
Leave a card in the Compact Flash card reader slot.
Apparently the system balks when this USB device isn't loaded.
