Save As

With Win 2000, enter an app, press Save As. Up comes a list of the files
in the directory in alphabetical order. Great.

With XP, Save As shows the list in reverse alphabetical order. I have to
right click on the file list, select Sort by Name, and then it is sorted
by name in the correct alphabetical order.

Is it possible with XP to have the computer remember that whenever I
press Save As I want them sorted by Name in order?

Also the save dialog has the bar on the left My Documents, Desktop,
etc., even though I have my settings for Classic Windows.

Or...

To resolve this behavior, reset the default sort order:
1. Right-click Start, click Explore and then click drive C.
2. On the View menu, click Details.
3. Click the Name column to sort items by name, press and hold down the CTRL
key, and then quit Windows Explorer by clicking Close in the upper-right
corner of the screen.
4. Release the CTRL key.
5. Restart your computer.

NOTE: You must perform these steps exactly as they are listed. For example,
do not quit Windows Explorer by clicking Exit on the File menu.

Doesn't matter whether classic or not and it's called the Places bar.

If you want to hide the Places bar...

Thanks. Did not work. Open File. Everything in reverse order.

The registry is correct. I did not have to import the registry, as Explorer ShellState is

ShellState=hex:24,00,00,00,33,08,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\
01,00,00,00,0d,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00

The file you referred me to is:
"ShellState"=hex:24,00,00,00,33,80,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\
01,00,00,00,0d,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00

Changed the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

Old value:
ShellState=hex:24,00,00,00,33,08,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\
01,00,00,00,0d,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00

New value:
"ShellState"=hex:24,00,00,00,33,80,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\
01,00,00,00,0d,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00

Okay, Windows Explorer works fine. Somehow a bad value came into the registry. 80 was changed
somehow (?) to 08.

Now why FileOpen with applications give things in the wrong order?

You changed an entry in the registry. Try rebooting or kill explorer.exe
and restart it.

To kill explorer and restart it.

Open the Task Manager...
Ctrl + Shift + Escape | Click on the Processes tab | Locate and highlight
explorer.exe | Right click explorer.exe | Click End Process | Click
Yes to the Task Manager Warning that pops up | Click File on the Toolbar |
Click New Task (Run...) | Type in: explorer | Click OK

End Process on explorer.exe will make your Desktop and all programs
disappear. This can be startling. Restarting explorer will bring
everything back.

This can fix/restore/reinitialize/refresh a lot of things.

Did it.

Open an app. Press the Open menu. I see the files listed in reverse alphabetical
order.

This worked for one person, try it...

[[Neither of these methods worked, but I managed to fix the problem by
simply
clearing the "Remember each folder's view settings" checkbox in the Folder
Options, sorting files by name and then applying changes to to all
folders..]]
