Save as Type section grayed out - need to change .dot to .doc

Anyone know why the Save As Type section would be grayed out? Have a .dot
document that I want to save as a .doc document. Thanks!

You don't "save a .dot as a .doc". You use the File > New dialog and choose
the template, and you get a document based on the template. That document can
be saved as a .doc.

Even if you save the template as a .dot and change its extension to .dot,
Word still knows that it's a template and not a document -- there's data at
the beginning of the file that identifies it.

You have defined a template ("a *shell* that I want to rename/resave as a
document"), but the correct way to do this is to use the New instead of Open
command to create a document based on the template. It will be a complete
copy of the template, which you then save as a document under a new name.

Thank you for your response but again this it *not* a document *I* created,
it was sent to be by someone else in the .dot extension. I want to open it
up and *save it as* a document - with the .doc extension. It won't let me do
this, however, the person *who sent me the original document* CAN change the
type when I forward it to her.

The simplest solution is to get the documents *resent* to me already in
'doc' extension, but I'm being told they've not run into this problem before.
Thanks for the response - much appreciated.

It makes no difference who created it. It is *not* a document at all if it
has a .dot extension. It is a template and most be used as such. Put it in
your templates folder and use File | New to base a new (unnamed) document on
it or double-click it in Windows Explorer, which will run the New command to
create a new document. Then save that document.

Thanks, I will try that. When you say "put it in your templates folder" is
that as simple as saving the word attachments to a template folder? Would
you mind telling me the steps if they are not too time-consuming? I am more
literate than I sound :) so I will follow abbreviated instructions...

It doesn't matter who created it - a template is a template and evermore
will be as you have already been told - twice!
Put it in your user templates folder (as defined at tools > options > file
locations > user templates) and create new documents from it.

Your templates folder is where you put it. If it is in the default location,
that location varies by the version of Word as well as the operating system.
You can find it under Tools > Options > File Locations. For more on the
different kinds of templates, tabs on the file new dialog, and locations of
templates folders see http://addbalance.com/usersguide/templates.htm.

An alternative is to put the template on your desktop, and with Word open,
double click on the icon for the template. It should create a new document
based on the template. When you save it, it will be a document with a .doc
extension.

The latest versions of Word can save a template as a document, but this is
not a good idea. Instead, follow the procedure outlined by Suzanne. (This
may explain why the person who sent it to you can do this, but you cannot.)

At this point Charles and Graham have answered your question, I think. As
Graham says, you can find the location of the "user templates" folder from
the File Locations tab of Tools | Options, but if you double-click on the
file anywhere other than in the File Open dialog of Word, the default action
will be New rather than Open, and New is what you want.
