Cannot create new doc from template

Everytime I try to do a "save as" from a template, it does not give me the
option of saving it as a .doc. The drop-down box is grayed-out and has only
the original name of the template, which is .dot.

Can anyone tell me why this is? I have many docs to work on, each with
different information but I need to keep the same format for everyone.

I'd appreciate any help.

That's because you're not supposed to open the template itself.
You're supposed to click on File->New, choose the template,
create a new document based on the template, and click on
File->Save to save the new document to any .doc name you want.
