"Save As" only as a .bmp, can not save as .jpg

When attempting to save various images from web
pages, "save file as" only offers the file type of .bmp
(.jpg or .jpeg are not even listed as a choice). The
properties of the specific image show it as being a .jpg.
Any clues as to how this changed? or a fix?
Also, if you choose to email the particular image, it is
recognized as a jpeg. Please help if you can.
