Save As is messed up

Recently, I've noticed that when I try to do a Save As in apps such as IE or
Firefox or Thunderbird or Acrobat or ..., the display of the files and
directories is in disorder.

Used to be, I could control the display by choosing list or details from the
drop down menu and the setting would stick. The settings no longer stick.

And, if I right click and ask to arrange by names, the names are sorted in
reverse order.

I expect that some registry setting has gotten munged.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

In recent weeks, the only software that I recall installing was Norton
Auntie Virus 2005 on 26 Aug 2005.
I expect that is what screwed things up. Why? I have no idea!

Resetting Folder options seems to have fixed the problem.

I have not touched folder options in at least a year, so some software must
have blown the setting.
I'd have to blame NAV 2005 as that was the only recent software installation
(on 26 Aug 2005) and I did not notice the problem until after that date.
