Save As displays "fname.ext" rather than filename in URL

All,

I'm having a problem with IE's Save As dialog, for some strange reason
when I browse to one of our intranet sites (i.e.
https://oursite.ourcompany.com/downloads/someexcelfile.xls) the page 1.
doesn't open automatically in Excel and 2. when prompted to Save /
Open, the filename is "fname.ext". Obviously, this completely screws
up the Open feature because the extension ".ext" isn't a known MIME
type and when I save, I have to type in a new filename with the proper
extension.

I can't tell you much about the server hosting the site or the pages
themselves (third party app), but I've never seen this happen before in
IE and wondering if anyone else has run across a similar situation.

Any suggestions would be helpful as I've spent hours searching Google
and Microsoft sites.

TIA,
Chris.
