Hi

I've just installed a 250GB SATA HDD plus a SATA PCI card and I want to use
the new drive for storage. I installed the drivers for the PCI card when
prompted and now I need to
format the new hard drive I believe, but I'm terrified of making a mistake.
I did go into
"Disk Management" and right click the new HDD and it gave me the option to
use the add new partition, but I don't know if that's what I need to
do?..( new volume?.. logical drive? etc.etc..)

If someone could give me a step by step explanation in novice friendly
terms I would be extremely grateful.

My set up as it now stands is.

A:/....Floppy
C:/....80GB ATA HDD primary ide master NTFS primary partition (with WinXP
Home already installed.)
(Unallocated 250GB SATA HDD on SATA connection 1 PCI card.....new
installation. )
D:/....DVD\RW secondary ide master
E:/....DVD\RW secondary ide slave
F:/....removable storage...comes up for digi camera when using card reader.

My intentions are to leave my apps on C:/ drive and move "My Documents"
folder to the
new storage HDD.

Go ahead and add the new partition using the disk manager. You cannot destroy the data on your C: drive when you are adding a partition. This is because you cannot add a partition to used space. Once you do this, you will have access to the storage space of the new drive. It will, however, change your drive leter designations to the following...

A:/....Floppy
C:/....80GB ATA HDD primary ide master NTFS primary partition (with WinXP
Home already installed.)
D:/....(Allocated 250GB SATA HDD on SATA connection 1 PCI card.....new
installation. )
E:/....DVD\RW secondary ide master
F:/....DVD\RW secondary ide slave
G:/....removable storage...comes up for digi camera when using card reader.

Once this is done, you can move your "My Documents" directory to the new drive.

My card's docs recommended a low-level format on the drive to start
with. I did that and then installed XP with no problems.

You are lucky actually. I could not get SATA to work with a Parallel
ATA drive installed also.

Down the road, or even right now, you might consider using the SATA
for your system drive. You'll love the extra speed!

No problems here. I run my SATA drive as the system drive, and have
three (yes, three) older ATA drives running as well. All coexist just
fine. I did briefly disable them while I was installing XP on the
SATA drive, then re-enabled them afterwards. No problems. Most folks
have problems understanding that they have to load the SATA controller
drivers in XP setup at the very beginning. Once they get past that,
all is well.

SATA isn't all that much faster than ATA133. At most, you are looking
at mayber a 5 percent gain in speed, if that. Now, if you are looking
into the future, I agree. ATA is topped out, while SATA is still in
it's childhood.
