Sata hard drive not picked up

I have two hard drives. One is IDE PATA, the other is SATA. Both are
bootable, and have booted and worked as data drives in the past.
That is, I could selectively boot (using F8 and choosing which to boot
from) from either, and use other as a data drive (eg I could move
files back and forth).

Now suddenly if I boot from the IDE drive, the SATA drive does not
show in MyComputer. Yet I can still boot up from either drive.
The BIOS shows both drives everywhere it should AFAIK.

So I am wondering - where should I look for what has gone wrong?

Thanks

XP or Vista? In the BIOS, is the SATA drive in IDE compatible mode or AHCI
or RAID? For an easy life you want it in IDE mode, AHCI needs extra Windows
drivers for it to be seen in XP.

I suppose it could be a corrupted driver even in IDE mode, so have you got
any old backups you can try?
