sata drive files on new install

R

robert

installed xp on to new system, had my old sata raid1 drives that had my
backup files on them so i thought that if i split the drives i would be able
to transfer the files from the sata to the new pata drives.
Question is this i cant find the drives when in the operating system, how do
i connect the drives so that i can see the files
winxp pro
giga-byte ga-7nnxp
2 sata drives connected but not seen on the sata ports
pata drive with operating system on ide 1.
everything works fine except i cant see the sata drives
Help
Thanks

1. Are the SATA ports controlled by the BIOS? If so, are they enabled
in the BIOS?

2. Are the appropriate drivers loaded in the OS for the SATA RAID?

didn't want to enable the os drivers in case they overwrite the drives as it
is a different m\b

In that case what about putting the drives back in the old PC and
copying via network?

You need to rebuild the RAID array by installing the appropriate
software and configuring it.

This is probably the only thing that will work. The two SATA disks
will have had their data arranged by the RAID on the old motherboard;
this is likely unreadable by any other model of RAID chip. Also
unreadable the wrong way around - make sure they're plugged in as the
same disk0/disk1 as they were originally.

Which will be why Robert can't see them in Windows. If he looks in
manage/storage/disk management, he'll probably see both disks, but
with unknown partitions on them or nothing at all (or one of each).

Which will destroy the data he wants to get off them. Careful now.

We seem to be overlooking that this is a RAID1.
As such, you should be able to simply try ONE of the drives,
not the other. Yes you should install the windows driver.
If you system had been configured to "automatically" write
to the drive, change that OS or app setting. Since it's
Winxp pro and you have ability to assign drive letters it
doesn't seem as likely there would be anything trying to
write to the drives, except perhaps a raid management
software so don't run that yet... though I doubt it would be
a problem, i'm not certain of that.

thanks all hit problems thought i could mount 1 drive and get the files of
it then set up a new array using the new m\b drivers but made a mess of it
so 6 months of bittorent lost.
that will teach me next time backed up onto disc or a new drive before doing
anything
thanks again

What exactly did you do?
Mounting one drive of a two-drive RAID1 array cannot lose
files (unless the other drive had failed), that is the whole
point of RAID1.

Of course you can't "set up" a new array, that by definition
does wipe out the existing data, at least to the extent that
it's logically gone.

So you lost 6 months worth of stolen music, DVD and software? ****ing
excellent.

Probably. But then, perhaps it was six months of his favourite soap
opera because he's at work when it's on TV and it's easier than using
a VCR.

Bittorrent is a distribution technology, and has been commercialised
succesfully (eg Valve Software's Steam platform). What is distributed
over it is not related to the fact that it is Bittorrent. See "Usenet"
for another similar case.
