Sata advise/ help appreciated ... TIA (thanks in advance)

I'm very new to Sata........ I've had 2 problems setting it up and a brand
new drive die on me in the process

My mobo is a A7N8XE- Deluxe...
Barton XP3200
1gb Geil ddr ram
ATI Radeon x800pro graph card
1 WD 120gb sata drive (2nd on way)

Set up queries.....

Sata settings: SCSI or RAID (sata drive showing as a SCSI device) !?!?!?!?

My system is running on a sata drive at present, only way I could get it to
work (with what I know) was to enable other boot devices via bios.

My manual says see section 'xyz' for setup info, but it only goes upto 'abc'


Any help appreciated

If you use the latest BIOS, it should be labelled correctly.

Should be able to set boot device to SATA/SCSI before IDE.

The downloadable PDF manual for A7N8X-E Deluxe has a short 3 page
section in it (e1465 manual section 5.5 page 107).

Use explorer to examine the motherboard CD. Sometimes there
is a "manuals" directory on the CD, with separate documents which
are not on the Asus download page.

This file had one of the first separate manuals version 092.
This SATARaid_Manual_Rev092 manual is 36 pages.

There are possibly later versions of manuals on other motherboard
maker's sites, for the SIL3112. I have some, but don't know where
I got them.

SCSI emulation is a convenient way to introduce foreign file
systems to the OS. SCSI has a linear address space, and at
the OS level, the OS doesn't have to know about CHS. On
the minus side, the SCSI emulation hides certain information
normally available about the disk drive. And SCSI emulation
may mean that a disk drive maker's diagnostic will not work
until the drive is placed on a Southbridge port.

And information about using RAID chips or interfaces, to run
separate drives in non-RAID mode, is never documented. For
many (but not all chips - there are always exceptions), it
is possible to run them in non-RAID, but it means a steady
stream of questions gets asked here :-(
