Samsung SF-4500 won't print

I've got a Samsung sf-4500 multi-function printer, and I have downloaded a
driver file for Windows 98 from Driver.com. The trouble is when I try to
print from Word, say, the spool progress bar remains at 0% and nothing
appears to be happening. When I turn the printer off, it says that the paper
tray is empty.

I thought it might be the driver, so I also down-loaded the Scanner driver,
but like wise,
I can't capture any images and it says that either the computer is off or
there is a problem with the cable and that it needs to be bi-directional.
So after buying a new cable and being told by the shop assistant that
printer cables are bi-directional nowadays, I gave it another shot, and
still nothing.

Perhaps the there is something wrong with the interface board on the
printer, what do u think?

Hi!

Can you get a driver from Samsung?

there is a problem with the cable and that it needs to be bi-directional.
So after buying a new cable and being told by the shop assistant that

Your printer cable is no doubt bidirectional...all new ones should be. Even
many older ones seem to work fine, but it helps to have a new and known
working cable when you're troubleshooting.

Have you tried another printer to see if it works using the same cable and
port? (HP Printers make for a good test.)

However, your computer's printer port (I am assuming this printer connects
via the parallel port, and not USB) may not be operating in a
bidirectional/ECP/EPP mode. Check your computer's documentation to see how
you get into system setup. Go in there and look up the printer port. It
should be set to "bidirectional" or "ECP" or "EPP". If it is not, set it
that way. Save your settings and reboot.

Once you get back into Windows 98, uninstall the printer software (as well
as anything related, such as scanner drivers). Disconnect the printer and be
sure it is deleted from the Printers folder. Reboot. Then download a fresh
copy of the driver software (from Samsung if possible), connect the printer
and try setting it up again.
Perhaps the there is something wrong with the interface board on the
printer, what do u think?

I think you have a problem with the computer. Has this printer ever worked
with the computer in question?

Thnakyou so much for taking the time to reply :)

No. They only have a driver for Windows XP.

Yep. I have a Brother hl-820, and it worked just fine, using the same cable
and port. What's more, when I tried printing using the SF-4500 selected in
software, but swapping the cable over to the HL-820, Windows said that the
wrong computer was attached.

I have looked in the LPT port settings under system, but there is nothing
there. But under printer properties, there is a check mark against
bi-directional.

No. Usually I use it in stand alone, but this week I tried connecting up the
computer to it for the first time.
