Regarding the new Samsung monitor(20" syncmaster 205BW): The problem boils down to:

The monitor requires a resoltuion setting of 1680x1050, however that is not one of the choices on the desktop properties screen. There doesn't seem to be any way to set the resolution to the correct parameters. This makes no sense, as most of the monitors seen in the stores now are in this newer rectangular format.
