Am having difficulty installing a Sagem 800 ADSL Modem in a particular
Windows XP system. I have installed the drivers before attaching the USB
connector as required by the installation CD. However when I attach the USB
connector it only installs the USB ADSL Loader and a USB device and then
hangs in trying to install the USB WAN Adapter. I know this should be the
sequence as I have successfully installed it on another XP System using the
same CD, same modem and same USB cable. What could be causing the other XP
system to hang? The only other clue I have is that when I go into System in
control panel and try and use Add Hardware wizard it comes up telling me it
is already trying to install another device. I have also used Eusing's free
registry clener to clear out rubbish from the registry, but this has not
helped.

Should I just wait for 2 days for the Windows XP system to finish installing
the device? or is there some other explanation why this particular XP system
will not install the ADSL modem.

Any clues would be appreciated.

Does said modem have a CAT5 connector? Does your computer have a network
card? The modem should have come with a crossover cable....

Modem does not have a CAT5 connector - only a USB connector. The computer
does not have a network card as far as I know.
I used the same cable to connect the other XP system and it worked fine, and
I know the USB port I am connecting it to works fine. As far as I am
concerned I haveeliminated the modem, the cable and the USB port as soources
of the problem. I am sure it is something to do with this systems XP system.

Give it up and buy an ADSL modem/router. No drivers, no software, no fiddly
installations. You can pick up a decent Netgear (W834GT) for around £60.

I have never used a USB modem and, hopefully, never will. You're making a
sow's ear out of a silk purse. Or something. You're certainly making the job
100 times harder than it need be.
