Safety on th internet

-- My ISP advised me to download AdAware and a 'SnapFills' window opened
inviting me to use 'NoAware' to check for spyware. Their search revealed that
17 cookies were found none of which posed a real threat. I again tried to
download ad-aware.com from Computeractive download site with the same result.
I was suspicious so I uninstalled 'NoAware' and replaced this with MS
AntiSpyware beta version. When I ran the check I was assured that I had
nothing to worry about but am still not convinced as a previously safe
checkpoint (made after it was returned from the workshop) may have
disappeared when I next roll back 'XP(Home ed)' or that I may have to use the
Recovery CD (OEM) yet again. I cannot make secure backups on my notebook pc
which only has a DVD ROM Incidentally the manufacturer is reluctant to
extend my warranty (except at a exhorbitant price) - "There is a known issue"
??!
Of course I am using anti-virus software and the firewall is ticked. The
critical downloads from MS, 23 listed, of which 4 were missing when I checked
against those in 'Add and Remove' one of which is a 'Malicious software
removal tool' although the update info.on the website assures me that these
are all present and correct!! ? There are a lot of SP1's but only one Hotfix
SP2 file currently installed on my computer. I have now requested the CD with
SP2 .... What more can I do to protect myself from internet 'corruption'
which so many of us seem to be experiencing these days? I have fixed OE so
many times that I have now given up on using E-mail.

You were right to be suspicious if you were trying to obtain the AdAware
program that is so often recommended. The ad-aware.com site is not related
to the AdAware program from Lavasoft. May want to bookmark their site:
