I have installed an external cd-writer and now I have a icon on the taskbar
which is "safely remove hardware" I don't intend to remove cd-writer but do
I need this icon on here all the time ? How do I remove it if I don't

You can't remove it but you can hide it. Right click on the taskbar and from
the drop down menu select Properties. The taskbar and startmenu properties
window will open. On the taskbar tab click the Customise button at the
bottom of the window. The customise notifications window now opens. Look
down the list of notification items until you come to the safely remove
hardware item. Now click on this. On the right you will see and option
marked 'hide when inactive' Click on the arrow to the right of this option
box. From the drop down menu select the 'always hide' option. Now click Ok.
In the next window click Apply followed by OK to exit.
