safely remove hardware?

After upgrading my Windows 98 to Windows XP, I had to
download new drivers, etc. for an HP Scanjet 4200c
scanners. Ever since that was installed, I am getting
a "safely remove hardware" icon at startup in
the "date/time" part of the toolbar (active). There is NO
way to cancel it or permanently exit from it. When you
click on it, you get a window that says "Safely Remove
Hardware" with my Scanjet listed as the device "to be
removed". There is no option in the window to exit or
cancel. It doesn't seem to be "doing anything" but it is
annoying as hell. If you know how to fix this bug I'd
appreciate it.

It is not a bug. It is there to protect your hardware. Read this: Safe Removal of Plug and Play Devices http://www.microsoft.com/technet/tr...prodtechnol/winxppro/reskit/prdh_dmt_cgwi.asp.
