Safely remove hardware

I recently installed a new modem and now there is an icon in my task
tray that says "safely remove hardware." When I click on it, it comes
up with only one option - to remove the modem I just installed. I
clearly don't want to remove the modem, and I want the icon off my task
tray. I can't find the application that puts this there - can someone
tell me where it is so I can disable or delete it?

Right click on the taskbar and choose Properties. Next to Hide inactive
icons click Customize. Scroll down to Safely remove hardware and right
click in the behavior collumn. Choose Always hide fro0m the drop-down box.

That hides the icon, but not removes it. Can it be removed?
