Safely remove hardware

Whenever I attach my USB flashdrive the 'safely remove hardware' icon shows
up. I thought that flash drives are hot switchable. What are the risk of
removing the flash drive without first making it safe through the icon?

Corrupting it, rendering the contents inaccesable(unreadable) at best,
destroying the drives write capability at worst.
