I think you should download the hotfix and keep it in a safe place in
case you want to install it at a later date, it could come in handy. If
you experience data loss on the drive when you unplug it the fix will be
on hand for you to install. Hats off to Microsoft for the service they
provided to help with your problem.

You can also check this Western Digital Spindown utility and see if you
can use with your model of drive, it might serve the purpose.

Hi Gail,

Would you pls post the link. I just received my external WD drive today and
am running w2k pro. I'd like to give the fix a try. Thx.

Hi John,

Thank you for the link! I did download the hotfix and I'm keeping it
until/ if I decide to try installing it. Microsoft assigned a support
technician to walk me through any subsequent problems I may have, but
I am just still too worried to install the hotfix right now, in case I
get some sort of memory dump error and can't even email. In any case,
Microsoft are coming through really well for me. I'm pleasantly
surprised!

Meanwhile, I'll check out this link you provided. Many, many thanks
to you, again!

Thanks Gail.

I'm trying to get usb into dos so I can boot off a floppy and ghost my
existing disk to the new external drive before I actually run the hotfix. My
system is running well now, so why tempt fate. :)

I'll definately post the results of the hotfix after I apply. Hopefully
soon. Again, thanks much for your prompt reply.

Well, I was able to get ghost working quicker than expected so I backed-up
and ran the hotfix.

No problems.

The only thing is I don't see any real difference. You get the "Unplug or
Eject Hardware" icon in your system tray and the drive shows up there, but
shutdowning down seems a lot like it did before applying the fix. The
drive's spin down doesn't sound or act any different. And if you were
copying a bunch of files over or in the middle of a backup, the drive will
still shut itself off and the copy or backup will fail. Maybe the fix does
protect the drives consistency in some cases, but what those cases are and
how to test them is beyond me.

Anyway, like a good Buddhist the fix does no harm.

Be well Gail (and John too - your voice was enlightening). Thanks.

Thank you, Bob, for your prompt reply and review. The Microsoft
Technician who has been corresponding with me also urges me to install
the fix, so I may try it in the next couple of days. Thanks again.
