Safely remove Hardware freezes Windows

Dear NG-Readers,

Each time when I try to get to the "Safely remove hardware"-dialog, It
takes _minutes_ untill it opens. Regarding to the "Event-Manager" I
got an error of the following kind (in german):

"Fehlerhafter Block bei Gerät \Device\Harddisk0\D."

which means in English:
"The device, \Device\Harddisk0\D, has a bad block."

Does anybody know how I can fix this without reinstalling Windows?

kind regards,

Did you try running CHKDSK /R from a command prompt?
