Safe Mode

I am running Vista Home Basic. When I reboot and try to go to safe mode I
find that there is no F8 button to take me to the boot up menu. How do I
boot up in Safe Mode?

Open the Run command Windows key + R
type 'msconfig' without qoutes, hit enter
Select 'Boot' tab
Under 'Boot Options' check the Safe Boot check box
Select 'Minimal' radio box or 'Network' if you need Internet Access in safe
mode
Click OK, a dialog box will appear, click OK to restart

When you want to return to 'Normal Mode' follow the same instructions above
in 'Safe Mode' but uncheck "Safe Mode" click OK then then your computer will
reboot.

Hi Dualc,

The F8 key should be on your keyboard. This tutorial will show you how
to boot into safe mode. Just select "Safe Mode" when you go to the
"Advanced Boot Options" menu.

Hope this helps,

The tutorial site had the answer. I of course know there is an F8 key on my
keyboard. I was hitting it, but only once and at the wrong time. I did as
the tutorial said and got the menu, and I got into safe mode.

The reason I wanted safe mode is that I have been trying to run system
restore, and I kept getting a message that it could not complete due to an
unknown error. Running is Safe Mode solved the problem. Thanks to both you
and Shawn for your imput.
