Safe Mode

I am trying to scan the drive and correct errors because
the disk scan won't work.

When I shut down, holding the 'ctrl' key does not open my
safe mode.

Is there any way into safe mode besides 'ctrl' or F8?

You need to press F8 when the computer starts up not shuts down.
