Safe mode & virus chking

Window Defender detects spyware/virus/adware and quarantines and files
indicating they are in archived status.

If one was to go Safe Mode and then run a Virus/spyware prog like Norton IS,
would this clean the files out of one's system?

It really depends on what the malware is. Scanning in Safe Mode to
remove malware is the correct method in any case. NIS may remove some
viruses but usually will not remove malware. I don't believe Windows
Defender identifies viruses since it isn't an antivirus.

A good way to find out if there are specific removal instructions for
whatever malware you have is to Google the malware's name. Sometimes
this works and sometimes it doesn't since it is common for malware to
have random names.

Here are some general malware removal steps which include the necessary
preparatory work. You will see that the victim is instructed to do all
work in Safe Mode.

In addition..

Running a full system antivirus scan or anti-spyware scan in Safe Mode can
be a good idea. Some viruses and other malware like to conceal themselves
in areas Windows protects while using them. Safe mode can prevent those
applications access and therefore unprotect the viruses or other malware
allowing for easier removal.

''In safe mode, you have access to only basic files and drivers
(mouse, monitor, keyboard, mass storage, base video, default system
services), just the minimum device drivers required to start Windows.''

Because of that some malware does not load in Safe Mode and is easier to get
rid of.
