safe mode in Windows XP Professional

In the help screen for safe mode there is a claim that a
menu is supposed to appear when one hits the restart
button, upon which one hits the F8 key to restart in safe
mode. I can not get this menu to appear, and pressing the
F8 key after selecting restart seems to have no effect.

Is this instruction left over from a previous version of
Windows, and not upgraded for Windows XP Professional? Is
there perhaps some other way to get into safe mode other
than that described in the help screen?

You need to press the F8 key right after the BIOS POST screen, and before XP
starts to load. You can also click Start, Run and enter MSCONFIG Go to
the BOOT.INI tab and check the /SAFEBOOT options.
