The print head on my Canon S520 appears to be hosed. Deep cleaning
does not help, and the Nozzle test pattern shows a large number of
missing lines.

So I am going to buy a new print head, and see how long that lasts.

However, I have two questions that I would appreciate some feedback
on...

Firstly, when I removed the print head, the bottom of it was damp with
black ink. Is this normal, or is it a sign of something else being
wrong?

Secondly, I have been using generic ink with this machine (through
Carrot Ink). Even if this has hosed the machine, I don't regret it as
I have saved more in cheap ink than it would cost me to replace the
machine. However, is generic ink likely to have caused me problems?

Thanks in advance.

The generic ink probably got it. Not all generic inks are created equal.
You might be able to save the head by cleaning it. Lots of people use
Windex, but you have to be careful.

Have you tried runnig the printhead under a jet of steam from a
kettle? That works for me.

Nothing works -- it is pretty ill. It wasn't used for a couple of
months, and that seems to be the root of the problem, along with the
possible problems with generic ink.

However, as a followup, I just called Staples and they claim not to
stock the print heads (although other postings found through Google
suggest that they do) -- can someone suggest a supplier?

Thanks for the advice,

It is a Canon only part.
Some Staples will try to sell you the BC33E head system and that is wrong.
