S-L-O-W Upgrades and creation of System Restore Points

I now have SRPs, but it can take as long as 3-4 hours to create one!
Automatic Microsoft upgrades work, but can also take 3-5 hours, even
with Webroot Internet Security Essentials disabled. Looking at Task Manager
I/O rates, it appears that generating an SRP goes at 256 bytes at a time.
Are
they heavily compressed? One record may take a second.

Is there anything that can be done to speed this up? It certainly does not
take that long on a comparable machine or in Windows Server 2008 or Windows
7 RC.
TIA

You have one REALLY screwed up (that's a technical term) machine!

It's difficult to even know where to begin.

Other updates and installation seem to work in real time.
All other applications seem to work.
I don't know what I could have done unless it is Vista SP2.
My guess is that it is related to priority, but I don't know how to fix it.

Thanks,
Ed
