Outlook 2007: Numerous problems and inefficiencies...

D

Drew

I was a (relatively) happy Outlook 2003 user who recently upgraded to
Outlook 2007 (don't ask me why!) only to find a lot of problems. I
attributed many of the problems and inefficiencies to my old laptop,
and went out to get myself a new laptop (with 2GB memory and faster
disk access), only to find that the problems still remain. My
environment is Outlook 2007 (with all the latest patches) running on
Win XP Home (with all the latest patches as well). There is no
Exchange server involved.

1) Many times new emails appear in the virtual Search > Unread Mail
folder but do not appear in Inbox unless
a) I click on the email in the virtual folder, or
b) I restart Outlook.

Sometimes if I wait a long time and continue to download emails at my
usual rate (every 20 mins), I will see old emails from 2-3 hours back
show in my Inbox. Judging from the posts to this group, it seems like
many people have experienced this problem in one form or another.

2) Each time I restart Outlook - regardless of how I shut it down - it
warns me that the .pst might be corrupt and asks if I want to restart
in Safe mode.

2a) Restarting in Safe mode:
-- "Send immediately when connected" is always checked in Tools >
Options > Mail Setup [I always keep this unchecked and have to
manually change this each time.]
-- "Disable Scheduled Send/Receive" is always checked in Send/Receive
Send/Receive Settings [I always keep this unchecked and have to
manually change this each time.]
-- Outlook churns away claiming to be checking/fixing something and
after a while it stops without providing any feedback whatsoever.

2b) Restarting in Normal mode:
-- It doesn't seem like anything is corrupt except for the usual
problems and inefficiencies stated above and below.

3) Upon Restart, I always get a "you have a junk email message which
has been moved to the junk folder" and when I ask to see the junk
folder, it is empty!

4) Moving emails from Inbox to another folder either by dragging/
dropping or by using the right-click "Move to Folder..." functionality
takes an eternity. It used to be instantaneous in Outlook 2003.
Windows Task Manager does not show any other processes competing for
resources.

5) [on occasion] Clicking on a new message takes an eternity for the
body to appear in the Reading Pane. Double clicking takes an eternity
for the message to open in a new window. Windows Task Manager does
not show any other processes competing for resources.

My primary .pst is 2.2 GB after having recently compressed it. In
addition I am connected to 6 other archive .psts. I have 3 POP/SMTP
accounts and a primary IMAP/SMTP account. Outlook 2003 handled all of
this just fine.

I have scanned the various Outlook Usenet groups as well as
Microsoft's very uninformative KB without much success. If anyone has
any insight or suggestions, I would greatly appreciate them.

TIA,
Drew

When you say "copied", did you overwrite the existing pst file that had been
created when you set up your mail profile?

Then you probably need to create a new Outlook profile. Overwriting an
existing .PST file (the one created when you installed Outlook 2007) almost
always corrupts the Outlook profile in use.

If I remember correctly, I believe I did overwrite the existing .PST.
It sounds like this might be the reason for the strangeness that I
have been experiencing.

what exactly do you mean and can you provide some pointers/URLs as to
how I should go about doing this? Do I need to archive my current PST

Your current .PST is fine, Outlook needs no re-install, you need a new

Hi everyone..

Now you got me curious.

What's this about overwriting an existing PST file?

Are we talking only if upgrading from Outlook 2003-2007?

I am running outlook 2007. I need to re format my computer.

I am going to copy the contents of \microsoft\outlook and also \roaming\microsoft outlook to a backup drive.

So what's the procedure to copy it back after I reformat? Don't I simply re install outlook and let the new install create a new outlook.pst and set up my email accounts etc and then simply overwrite it all with my backed up ones? (all 2007)

What is the correct procudure to restore such a backup if using outlook 2007??

Methods for migrating Outlook data correctly have been posted here countless
times. Are you capable of reading these posts or do we need to create
another just for you? Overwriting a PST file remains a a guaranteed way to
corrupt your profile and always has been in every version of Outlook. Is
that much clear?

Russ - I'm sorry if I'm being a pain but I genuinely can't find any posts on here that explain how to backup/restore Outlook 2007 data properly.

In fact I'm getting more confused because everyone on here is saying not to overwrite and then I found this website that says different.

http://www.backuphowto.info/how-to-backup-restore-data-e-mail-account-settings-outlook-2007

Scroll down to 'restore your email data'. It says to copy the pst file back to where you backed it up from, which I'm assuming means to overwrite the existing as tghere must be one still there.

Here are the sites you should read:
http://www.slipstick.com/config/backup.htm
http://www.howto-outlook.com/Howto/backupandrestore.htm

Any site that tells you to copy your PST file to the default directory is in
error. Doing so always runs the risk of corrupting your Outlook profile.
