RW media--can't format

DW

I have a new WinXP sp2 system. It has an OEM Nero Express 6 suite installed.
INCD4 was installed with the suite.

Brand spanking new NEC DVD RW+/- drive.

When I stick a DVD RW disk in, and open Nero Smart start and try to format
and prepare the RW for use ...it will not work. I click on the icon and
nothin'.,..

any ideas?

Does your dvd rw get recongize in the bios setting , Did you install the

firmwave for your dvd rw optical drive ?

RoadRunner,

Well...first, the drive(s) will record cds and in Nero StartSmart every
function, including record DVD and record CD, as well as make DVD bootable,
seems to be working. I don't have any DVD's but I've been recording
CD's--although not with Nero. Also the drives read. So at least, at the
hardware level these drives seem to be functioning fine. And Device Manager
says they are working properly.

I have not checked the bios but it seems beside the point if the drives are
working.

It is only the "format discs" that is not working. That seems a software
problem somewhere between WinXP and Nero. Correct me if I am wrong, please.

Does the Microsoft knoiwledge base have any indication that this might be a
Windows problem? I haven't done the searches yet, hoping to touch bases with
someone who has already dealt with this problem or maybe a MVP or Tech
support.
