Running Out of Hard Disk Space

P

Peter

Have Dell Inspiron Notebook running XP. Computer came
with only 5 GB Hard Drive and is totally allocated as
Drive C. Due to my space limitations I added a 120 GB
External Drive which works great and is now "D" drive. I
have uninstalled MS Office and other programs that were
on "C" drive and reinstalled them on D drive. My question
is I was told that their are some files in XP that I
could safely move to D drive from C that would free up
additional space on my main drive which is C drive on the
notebook. I currently have only 200 MB of free space on C
drive and need to fee up additional space. Is there any
files I can move to the other drive from C drive. Would
appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Is your D drive partitioned?

You may be able to create space in drive C by moving folders to drive D depending on what you have in drive C.

Hidden files?

To move programmes you need to uninstall and reinstall through Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add / Remove Programs. To move Temporary Internet Files -Start, Control Panel, General tab, Temporary Internet Files, Settings, Move Folder. To relocate Outlook Express store select Tools, Options, Maintenance, Store Folder, Change.

If your My Documents folder is in your C drive then create a My Files folder in your D drive and copy ( not move ) the contents of My Documents to your new folder. Then delete the files in your My Documents folder ( if you encounter problems deleting use Shift + Delete to bypass the Recycle Bin ).

You can also move the paging file, which would be best in it's ownpartition at the beginning of your D drive!

You next to get the free space on drive C to more than 15%, preferably 25-30%.
