Running/installing programmes from a CD after formatting HD

I formatted my HD a few weeks ago, and now when I try to run some progs from
CDs (or install) I get the following message entitled '16 bit Windows
Subsystem':

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for
running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close to
terminate the application.

The latest CD I'm trying to run is a Disney kids game if that's relevant.
I'm stuck here.

From what I've read it seems (?) that winupdate.exe is causing
"AUTOEXEC.NT", "CONFIG.NT", "SHELL.DLL" and sometimes "COMMAND.COM" to be
messed up/deleted on only certain w2k of XP systems. Not everyone is
experiencing this.
End result: you can no longer run 16-bits programs. (Install programs fall
into that category too.)
Solution: put those files back in their original place
(%systemroot%\system32) and as an extra precaution make them read-only.
Where to get the originals?
Extract them from your XP CD:
extract <cd:>\i386\autoexec.nt_ %systemroot%\system32\autoexec.nt
extract <cd:>\i386\config.nt_ %systemroot%\system32\config.nt
extract <cd:>\i386\shell.dl_ %systemroot%\system32\shell.dll
extract <cd:>\i386\command.co_ %systemroot%\system32\command.com

Next go explorer and into properties for those files and set the read-only
attribute or
enter the commandlines:
attrib +r %systemroot%\system32\autoexec.nt
attrib +r %systemroot%\system32\config.nt
attrib +r %systemroot%\system32\shell.dll
attrib +r %systemroot%\system32\command.com

VMT for this, unfortunately I'm not too hot at fiddling with this sort of
detail! I tried my original, (legit I should add!) CD which was the VAIO
disc, and I couldn't get the info out. Probably doing it the wrong way.

Can you advise me as you would a total idiot! (Maybe you were, but I'mworse
than I thought!) Step by step if poss.

Cheers

This can be a couple of things:

1. The combination of the Avast anti-virus program and XP SP2:

Hi Peter,

I take it you have solved your problem, since I didn't hear from you on my
last request?
(Or are you afraid I will send you something to 'infest' your machine with?)
I can understand that, because you can't look into my deep blue eyes to see
if you can trust me.!
Rest assured.

cheers

oops,

I'm so sorry Peter, I just spotted a typo in the mailaddress I gave you.
It should read: medioN975 at hotmail dot com. (forgot the N)
