Running heads with page numbers

N

Norman Swartz

I want to have running heads on a document. I am using Word 2000.

On the left-hand (even-numbered) pages, I want the page number left-
justified in the header and the Author's name right-justified *on the same
line*.

On the right-hand (odd-numbered) pages, I want the document title left-
justified in the header and the page number right-justified *on the same
line*.

Can this be done? How?

Thanks.

Yes. Start with File | Page Setup | Layout | Headers and Footers:
Different odd and even.

Odd pages:
1. View | Header.
2. Select the paragraph and set a right-aligned tab at the right margin
( Format | Tabs ).
3. Click at the beginning of the line and type the document title.
Tab. Insert a page number field from the Header and Footer toolbar.
4. Close the header.
5. Temporarily insert a manual page break (Ctrl+Enter) so you can set
up the even page header.

Even pages: Same as odd pages, except in step 3, insert the page number
field, then Tab, then type the author's name. Close the header and
delete the manual page break inserted in step 5 above. Now you're ready
to start typing the text.
