Running DOS utilities in XP

R

Robin Clay

Greetings !

I have some old (VERY old !) DOS utilities that I still like to use.

Now they don't work on THIS (laptop) computer, running XP, although they
still work on my other (desktop) computer, also running XP !

I get an error message
---------------------------------
[filename]
VDD. An installable Virtual Device Driver failed Dll initialization. Choose
'Close' to terminate the application.
Close Ignore
-----------------------------------

"Ignore" doesn't make it work, either !

I seem to remember there used to be a "Version" line I could put in my
AutoExec.Bat or MSDOS.Sys that would force use of a previous version....?

Or is there some other way ?

Hello, John !

I had never heard of that "facility" - but it only allows a choice of
Windows versions - and with WIN '95 I got the same result.

....and yet on my DeskTop (also running XP) they work just FINE....

Thanks for responding.

That "facility" has been around longer than XP. Is the machine that these
utilities run on using the FAT32 file system perhaps? And the box they don't
work on using NTFS maybe?
