Running CHKDSK on startup problem

E

Hi;
Here's the problem. When I set chkdsk to run on startup I get the following
error "Cannot open volumn for Direct Access"
I'm running Win XP Home Edition with SP2 installed. According to the MS tech
site, SP2 was supposed to solve this problem. So I am at a loss as to what
the next step is. Accepting all suggestions.
TIA
Earl

Earl, There is a known issue with Spyware Doctor. If you are using SD I
would delete the file 'ikhlayer.sys' from c:\windows\system32\drivers, your
chkdsk should work Ok again
If not then uninstall SD.

'Hi Rich;
Thanks for the quick response. I don't have Spyware Doctor installed. I ran
a search for ikhlayer.sys and it's not installed. I do have Trend Micro
Internet security installed if that matters.

Hello Earl,

"Windows XP chkdsk needs to have exclusive access to your volume to
run properly. That's why, to check the root drive, its done during
boot up, before windows system or other programs start accessing your
volumn.

In your case, during this start up routine, some program has already
started accessing your drive, denying the access that chkdsk needs.
You should try disabling suspect third-party programs/services that
may be running early, e.g. virus scanners, spyware scanners, firewall,
etc. You can do this in the System Configuration Utility (Start => Run
and type in "msconfig" {without the quotes}, and look under 'Startup'
and 'Services'.)"

Thanks for the help. Still couldn't isolate the offending service with
msconfig, so I rebooted in safe mode and chkdsk started and ran without a
hitch. I appreciate your assistance and suggestions.
