Running Balance in a row

I'd be most grateful if someone could help.

I need to calculate a running balance in a row of cells.

I need a formula in Cell B1 that will add the value in Cell A1 to the value
placed in Cell B1, next a formula in cell C1 that will add the value in Cell
B1 and the value in Cell C1 itself and so on... Is there anyway of doing this
without getting the circular cell referene warning coming up?

If B1 has a value it can't also contain a formula; the same for C1.

Put your running total in row 2.
=SUM($A1:A1) in A2 and copy across.
